Beadwork
Description
We love to capture a scene in nature with a photo, look at the colour combinations found in the photo and repeat it in a piece of adornment. Each bead has a place in the photo. The act of picking up each bead with a needle and fishing line and weaving it to the next is meditative. The end result is a bracelet or a necklace, or earrings that can remind you of a place or a time.
How Did We Get Here?
While working full time - Louise in office management and Nicki in healthcare - and raising families, there was little time to be creative besides designing gardens and taking pictures. With retirement looming, we both decided to explore our artistic side and took several courses at Fleming College of Art and Design, beginning with silver smithing and moving to off loom bead weaving.
We both fell in love with the vast array of colours, shapes, and sizes of the glass beads and all the things one could make with them - especially jewelry. From earrings to bracelets to necklaces and even eyeglass and mask holders, it has been so much fun to explore all the possibilities. And there's still more to learn and explore....one year it was chain making. We have been busy during the pandemic exploring all kinds of patterns and expanding our techniques. We have started using buttons and discs from local potters to create bead embroidery pendants and cuffs. Who knows what's next?
